Rescue Mission Announces New Appointment to the Board of Directors
SYRACUSE, N.Y. – The Rescue Mission Alliance is pleased to welcome Police Chief Kenton Buckner to its Board of Directors. In March 2021, Buckner joined the board consisting of 17 community leaders who are dedicated to helping men, women, and families struggling with homelessness and hunger in Central New York.
Chief Buckner, who was sworn in as Chief of Police for the Syracuse Police Department in November of 2018, began his law enforcement career in 1993. He served twenty-one years for the Louisville Metro Police Department, where he rose through the ranks to the position of assistant chief. He holds both Bachelor of Science and Master of Science degrees from Eastern Kentucky University. He is a graduate of law enforcement programs sponsored by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the Southern Police Institute and the NOBLE Chief Executive Officer Mentoring Program. Chief Buckner is a Commissioner for the Commission on Accreditation Law Enforcement Agencies, and recently completed Senior Executives in State and Local Government at the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University.
As a proponent of community policing, Chief Buckner has always worked to develop a strong relationship with community stakeholders, and other local, state and federal law enforcement partners. This, along with his background and years of service, makes him a perfect fit for the Rescue Mission’s Board of Directors.
The Rescue Mission Alliance, founded in Syracuse in 1887, has a long history of serving those in need. Beyond meeting basic needs of food, clothing and shelter, The Rescue Mission helps its clients develop a plan to permanently leave homelessness and hunger behind.
